rabid1stre: Angel 5.8! People got the text...and missed the subtext...and that's what allows JW and Company to continue churning out this tripe.
Yes! Spike got to kick Angel's ass. And be all snarky about it. Whoo-bloody-Hoo!
Amazingly, there are apparently people who DIDN'T think this would happen. Or are so overjoyed by the event that they failed to notice that Spike also got to look like a monumental jerk. He behaved like a shallow self-indulgent child who was so put out about standing in Daddy's (or big brother's if you like) shadow all these years that he couldn't wait to inflict a little payback...no matter WHAT the cost.
Now he wants to PROVE himself anyway he can. The equally amazing thing to me is that apparently the REDEMPTIONISTAS are proud of Spike for this huge step backward in character development. This episode reflected the Joss Whedon and Co. attitude that Spike isn't ready to be a hero. That he isn't as good as Angel and he was NEVER worthy of Buffy. In fact, his love for Buffy was really ALL ABOUT ANGEL. All about proving himself. The search for the little boy's "destiny" goes on. And where does it end? Predictably...in Angel and Spike bonding to fight side-by-side against evil.
And ANGEL will be the steady hand and level head that shows us the way. Spike won the cup and lost the war. How could anyone witness that Gunn and Angel scene and think, ANGEL ISN'T OUR HERO? Angel is the one who REALLY deserves the shanshu (JW and DF hit us over the head with that). Spike is the wet behind the ears brat that needs a whoopin' to set him straight. Yes...YES! Angel is having doubts...and those doubts are what the final, final scene is all about...it's a trick people and Spike is the shallow, self-centered, idiot that will be used to make the trick work. Thank god, Angel is there to save the day in the end.
Forget B/S...I can't believe Spike fans would not only watch but rave about this degradation of the man who once gently held the hands of the newly resurrected Slayer and offered her comfort. Nice to know he enjoyed "puttin' it to her.' Also nice to know that he went to get the soul and faced down demons because he is sure he has a 'destiny.' And don't even start me on the vulgarness of having him bang Harmony to let off a little tension...guess that makes Buffy's banging of a vampire for the same reason...okay!

who is reporting...sadly that AllyV...who vowed to watch to the bitter end is now saying, "Not even James can make me watch anymore of this crap." I mean...ALLY! (Rabid shakes her head) she's like...one of the founding members of this fandom.

Date: 2003-11-19 09:41 pm (UTC)And if it is any consolation, I didn't hate all of it either. In fact, I can see a good storyline (sans Spike) coming out of this. I loved the final...final bit. But I was nearly physically ill over the desk top (shades of As You Were with the "Don't Talk")sex and the implications about the certain person you mention above. None of it bodes well for our beloved Spike.
