SYTYCD? Hmmmm...well...
Jun. 19th, 2008 03:30 amThat wasn't really very special at all. I have to say I didn't like much of anything tonight. It all seemed sub-par and the judges annoyed me.
I will say that this time out I did enjoy Gev and what's her face...begins with a C or a K...anyway...the judges said she was weak and I completely disagreed with that. I thought HE was weak...mostly he just laid there on the ground or picked her up and turned her around...very little dancing involved in his part of the routine...it was all down to what's her face.
Twitch and uhm...begins with a C...or a K...had a lovely dance. It wasn't a waltz. I mean...come on...Twitch did one waltz step at the very end. There has to be a few waltz steps in the routine for it to be a waltz. On the other hand, for a street dancer, Twitch really did embrace the whole idea of flow and he seems very secure in his masculinity. Something I've noticed the street dancers tend to have lots of trouble with is sexual identity. The males refuse to do anything approaching point and the girls don't want to wear heels. It's a bit silly really, but I suppose a side effect of a style that is mostly posturing.
And speaking of silly...Comfort's partner...the poor, pale and skinny schmoe...he really was completely out of his depth with krumping. I did agree with Nigel there...he looked like he had to pee.
Finally...Joshua...I don't think he's really a popper. I think he's a well trained dancer who happens to pop. So, my applause for the efforts of street dancers will be going to Comfort, Twitch and Gev.
And it is time for the giants...is that Mark, Marcus or Marquis and...what's her face...begins with a C...or a K...anyway...time for them to go home.

I don't quite get what you mean here, but I was wondering why some girls had to wear heels and others didn't. It's one thing if you're doing contemporary, Kherington was supposed to be doing a waltz (in name only). She should have been in heels.

I thought they were a little harsh on her. She seemed okay during the performance. Also, I find it completely adorable how short the pair are.
But, I'll admit that I was a little unnerved by some of Gev's comments regarding his partner. I don't know how she feels about them, but they comes across as a little unprofessional. Especially when there's a lot of intimate-type touching in the dance.
Katee and Joshua. Yes, their dance was not perfect, but I'm rooting for them anyways. They entertain me and I think they have great dance chemistry for a pairing that just met.
The first pairing. They were disappointing after last night, but it does bring up an interesting question. When exactly are the costumes introduced to the dancers? If they're shown it from the very beginning, the critics comments are totally justified. But, if the dancers saw it for the first time the day before/day of, it's kind of last minute.

Date: 2008-06-20 12:18 am (UTC)Was it Mark? Marcus? Marquis? I really don't know...whom ever is paired with the giant blond. The giant blond needs to go and he's sort of vague...if he has another partner...maybe he'd do better.
Street dancers...hip-hop, poppers, krumpers...seem to have identity issues...or the ones for this show seem to at any rate. In past years they have refused to commit to styles that didn't show them as "a man" and this year Comfort made a big deal out of how she didn't like wearing dresses or being girly. I think the street styles call, as Nigel was saying, for a lot of posturing and masculine aggression and some of the dancers have trouble understanding that they must transcend that limitation to succeed on the show.
This year, however, the boys are certainly bringing it...and while Comfort seemed awkward and uncomfortable in her heels and beads last week...she was a good sport about it and didn't do too much posturing. I call it a sexual identity issue because real men can indeed dress in tights and do pirouettes and it doesn't mean anything about their identity. People who are insecure are the ones who sulk and complain about it.

Oh... Giant blond. Yeah, I'm not a fond of her either. Crying is just not cool because it looks really unprofessional.
What I notice is my attention wandering...that's never good.
Nothing worked at all there. Everything was much too busy looking. You just didn't know what to focus on, hence the 'Cat looks pretty today...' thoughts during the performance.
Speaking of Cat, I think she loves her job. She looks like she's actually enjoying herself. I don't often get that vibe from the other hosts.
