Since I may not be the only one who hadn't heard about this. One of the finest SciFi works ever is being redone as a mini-series for A&E and is showing tonight and tomorrow night. There will probably be encore performances, but I'm going to record the repeat at 1:00 am just to be safe.

The Andromeda Strain is a book by Michael Crichton...the same man who brought us Jurassic Park. The movie was cutting edge for its time and the story is rather timeless. I'm not really a Crichton fan, I don't like his style...but I do like his imagination and his science. Another great movie from that day is The Forbin Project. The book version of Colossus makes the Daleks look like pet poodles.

My parents took me to see both these movies (Andromeda & Colossus) when I was pretty young - I remember being amazed that they showed people's naked backsides! Is it any wonder I started out thinking I would go Pre-Med and end up majoring in computer science? (Yeah, I also grew up watching Star Trek)

Colossus was downright disturbing. It still is.

You bet it was disturbing

Leaving out the horrible things that happened to the women, even.

I can't remember if the movie had that scene with the priceless artwork burning or not...but it is still with me to this day.

The one where the art-worshipping guy is on one side of a wall of flame and the priceless painting is on the other and all he has to do to save the art is run through the incinerating fire. I vividly recall his gibbering as he huddled against the wall, wetting himself as he watched painting after painting melted away into nothing.

EEEK!

As for your parents...my mom was the same...she started me reading science fiction. I think I did Dr. Seuss, and then Edgar Rice Burroughs and Andre Norton. I, too, saw Andromeda at a very young age...I feel asleep and woke up at a very scary part--the part with the lasers and the self-destruct mechanism. I didn't see it properly until I was much older...but it was still good the last time I saw it...which was pre-Matrix, I know.

Oh...and Disheveled is finished...if you are brave enough to tackle the bad parts...or you can just hum and overlook the bad parts...and assume I explained stuff there.

Hee!

Ohmygosh...on TONIGHT????

**frantically changing the channel***

Darn. Halfway through. I guess I can TiVo the repeat at 1:00 and watch it tomorrow...one good thing about being mostly unemployed. I've nowhere to go!

Methinks I feel a hole in my sci-fi geekery. I've never seen or read either The Andromeda Strain or Colossus. :\

Actually, I'm not sure I've read *any* Michael Crichton books. *goes to look up book list*

Dude! He wrote and directed Westworld??? I didn't know that! lol Ah, Yul Brenner as a homicidal android gunfighter. Good times...good times... XD

Nope, I never had read any of his books. Seen a few of the movies (Jurassic Park, natch), but that's it.
