So, I took this from [livejournal.com profile] ladyoneill and thought it might give me some motivation to spend a little more time on LJ again. When in doubt, post a meme, right?

I'm not sure how many Supernatural fans I have on my Flist, because I don't write for the fandom, and I only talk about it sporadically. But, I do enjoy the big lugs and their carrying on as wayward sons. It looks like we are in for a good season, but it often looks like that, doesn't it? LOL

Like [livejournal.com profile] ladyoneill, I am a Dean girl. I like Sam. I like Cas. I like Bobby and John. But Dean has most of my empathy as I watch. We share a lot of similar characteristics, including a tendency to judge ourselves and others too harshly. I feel for Dean, but I don't exactly admire him. I think there might be more to admire sometimes in Sam. Though I am often frustrated by how blind Sam can be, I can see why Dean loves him so much.

I just took the Downton Abbey character quiz and found that I am Isobel Crawley.

And, that's pretty true to me. I am a little out of place, a little meddlesome, a bit of a class warrior and a bit of a social crusader. I think too much about stuff, as my buddy Kes likes to remind me, and I tend to stick my two cents in where it isn't necessarily wanted. I am surprised by this answer, as I didn't see it coming in the questions, but I think it is fairly accurate.

You can take the quiz for yourself if  you like at PBS...

So, after I posted the last bit, I thought about what I liked about the Doctors and I decided to do a Doctor Who meme.

This one is easy. Just use a few words to say what you loved about each Doctor and/or why someone should watch them.

ONE - Steampunk before it even existed, Susan
TWO - Jamie, Dithering
THREE - Bessie, Velvet Tux, Panache
FOUR - Quiet Authority, That Grin, Leela
FIVE - Tegan, The Cricket Gear
SIX - Cat Pin, Strangled Peri
SEVEN - Ace, Hints of Darkness
EIGHT - Steampunk TARDIS, The Victorian comeback, He kissed a girl and he liked it.
NINE - Those Amazing Blue Eyes. Leather. Rose Crushing.

You Are a Crime Drama

You may seem quiet and withdrawn, but you're paying attention to every single thing around you.

You intuitively understand people. You are an amazing listener.

You are very tightly-wound. You can get completely wrapped up in your job.

You're the type of person who always finishes what you start. You like to wrap things up completely.

"Son of a bitch!"

I managed to get my new computer out of its packing foam. The foam was INSIDE the computer. And I managed to set it up and go through the Windows 7 access and activation and install all of my components and get it to talk to all of the external hardware. Then, I started installing the essential software...Adobe Flash Player and Google Chrome and Adobe Reader and VLC media player and Virus Protection and Malware Protection and Firewalls.

And I fought, fought, fought with Windows 7 as I attempted to figure out what all of the new names for things mean and why it won't just let me see MY COMPUTER and why for some ridiculous reason 64-Bit doesn't recognize Adobe products. I mean, REALLY?

So, after all that, before I started on Instant Messengers and Vidding Software and Writing Software installs, I thought I would take a moment to enjoy some music videos. And that's when I noticed that I only have one harddrive. Yes, I should have noticed that when I unpacked the thing, but it was my first time ever looking inside a computer and I was mainly thinking about making sure everything was attached and what I had ordered--that is, the BRANDS, I had ordered. I did get 2TB of harddrive space, but it is all on the C: drive. There should be a D: drive, too.

So, the computer has to be stripped of all my personal settings and repacked for return shipping and I'm going to be without a computer for another month or however long it takes them to fix this situation. I mean, I suppose they could just send me another hard drive and call it even, but they probably won't do that.

"Son of a bitch!"

Meanwhile...here is a meme which I gakked from [livejournal.com profile] ramblinsuze to keep you all entertained while I'm gone.Read more... )

Have fun. But feel very bad that this list didn't include Edgar Rice Burroughs or Robert J. Sawyer. Read Hominids or Factoring God or the Farseer Trilogy. And read some Pratchett. Start with The Wyrd Sisters, I think, if you like some Shakespeare. I should be around for the next couple of days as I won't hear back from them until Monday.

Getting on board with the Supermoon savvy, I am snatching this meme from [livejournal.com profile] ramblinsuze
for your entertainment.

You were born during a Waning Crescent moon

This phase occurs right before the new moon.

- what it says about you -

You appreciate closure. It bothers you when people promise to do something and then don't follow through. You want to able to right the wrongs of the past. Studying history motivates you to improve the world. You put a lot of hope in the future and look forward to seeing technology and progress improve our lives.

What phase was the moon at on your birthday? Find out at Spacefem.com

And this is my sweetheart's moon phasing personality...

You were born during a Waxing Crescent moon

This phase occurs right after the New Moon, when we can start to see part of the moon that's illuminated by the sun.

- what it says about you -

You like having a clear vision of the future, and are good at helping people set out plans to accomplish important goals. Once you're done with a task, you're done with it. You don't like revisiting or rehashing issues you think are settled. You're inventive and encourage people around you to be new and different instead of copying from the past.

What phase was the moon at on your birthday? Find out at Spacefem.com

Waxing and waning crescents, that's us.

I snagged the Remembering 2010 on LJ meme from [Bad username or site: ”Ramblinsuze” @ livejournal.com] where you post the first line you wrote in each month of the year. And my first thought was that I might not have an entry for every month. But, in fact, more than half the time, my first entry was on the first of the month. The longest gap was in December, following up on the food poisoning.

January - I hope that this year brings all of you all the best...health, love, prosperity and ponies!

February - There are people who will tell you not to listen to those of us who claim Heroes is as good as ever this season.

March - I went to the rheumotologist yesterday.

April - I'm sure many of you have seen this by now, but it was new to me and quite delightful. It was something about a politician. I wonder how delightful it really was?

May – Oh, for heaven's sake! Artificial light AND a sloppy track?

June – So, I've used an HP computer and printer for the last 12 years.

July – Day 11 -- Almost every show I have ever watched disappointed me at some point, usually at the finale but sometimes much earlier. I never did finish this meme. I wasn't up to daily posting and I finally lost track of it.

August – I was just reading through the ruling from the judge that overturned Prop 8 in California.

September – I recently heard back from my congressperson about a petition I signed to change our attitude toward big business.

October – It is 3:39 pm in my neck of the woods.

November – I will spare you the details.

December – You all might be wondering, what the heck happened to Rae?

:Evil Chuckle: I like leaving 2010 with that line.

I have been inspired to create a MEME! Spread it far and wide, but let me know if you answer it because I'd love to see your answers.

It is about things that are supposedly eaten, but which might not be eaten that often.

When was the last time you had...

1) Campbell's Condensed Soup as soup (not in a recipe).

2) Cotton Candy

3) Homemade Pancakes (not frozen or restaurant, but can be from a mix)

4) Wax Candy (coke bottles, lips, whatever).

5) A Corn Dog

6) Homemade Shortbread (not from a store or mix).

7) Hamburger or Tuna Helper

8) Sloppy Joes/Manwiches

9) Malted Milk Balls

10) Toasted Marshmallows (5 bonus points if you made S'mores).

There you go!

Apparently, I write descriptive passages like Charles Dickens, sex scenes like Anne Rice, and snappy dialogue like Stephanie Meyers. I could take that and roll with it, hey?

Notice which badge I took...

I write like
Stephenie Meyer

I Write Like by Mémoires, Mac journal software. Analyze your writing!

And I hate her books. But the thing is...they sell like bottled ice water on a hot day. So, who am I to argue with that! This could, however, explain why I am so very critical of my own writing and mentally refer to myself as a hack!

EDIT: Oh, wait! Hang on! I just did What Wild Geese Know. And I came up with Stephen King pretty steadily on the style points...but get this...for my dialogue...

I write like
P. G. Wodehouse

I Write Like by Mémoires, Mac journal software. Analyze your writing!

Suddenly, I am polishing my fingernails on the lapel of my flannel pajamas. Look at that! I am not a hack. TA-DA! On the other hand, I do appear to be something of a populist writer, don't I? Wodehouse was writing frothy stage comedies, really. Where, I ask you, is the William Faulkner badge? Or the Trollope one? Probably reserved for MissMurchison!

Day 19 - Best TV show cast
Day 20 - Favorite kiss
Day 21 - Favorite ship

I am sorely tempted to give up on this meme which seems to be taking me forever. But I am moving along on the days now. Only 9 more to go.

Day 19 -- For me that would the rebooted Battlestar Galactica. Nearly everyone on that show was an excellent actor and I would follow most of them to other work. I get excited when I hear James Callas has been cast in Eureka and, even though I really don't care much for Eureka, I want to watch it. Same goes for Katie in 24 or the guy who played Helo who's name I cannot spell...I actually considered watching Dollhouse for about 30 seconds when I heard he was cast in it. And of course, Jamie Bamber I have already mentioned and Edward James Olmas was already legendary.

Day 20 -- Favorite Kiss? Hmmm! I did like that Nine/Rose kiss. I also found the Aeryn/John kisses and nose bumps and clothing gnawing to be very hot. But I am going to push the button on my way back machine and go with the Mulder/Scully kiss in The Truth. I loved Walter's reaction to it. Of course the best possible kiss ever...we never had...which will always be the true Ten/Rose kiss.

Day 21 -- Favorite Ship...still Ten and Rose. I think there is something so pure and romantic and yet passionately devoted in the Doctor/Rose relationship. Something that I think culminated in Ten...not Ten2, sadly. No matter how we slice it with Ten 2...it only works if there is a way to get the broken bits of Ten back together again. And I can't imagine Rose not working diligently to that end. So...second favorite ship...probably has to be John/Aeryn. They win of course by being the only really mature scifi relationship ever broadcast. But I still long for a happy canon resolution for the Doctor and Rose...I think I will have to wait for the book version or the movie when I'm 85 for that one, but I do have confidence that some little kid out there is as upset as I was about the screwed up Ten2 nonsense.
rabid1st: (Default)
Day 16 - Your guilty pleasure show
Day 17 - Favorite mini series
Day 18 - Favorite title sequence

Day 16 -- What is it that I won't generally admit to watching? Hmmm! Let me get back to you on that one.

Day 17 -- They don't really make the mini-series anymore do they? Well, Torchwood: Children of Earth was one. And not my favorite. Though I must say I loved most of it, just not the ending. I remember seeing Shogun and loving it. Again the ending is a downer. But I think my favorite one, if it IS a mini series...is the Horatio Hornblower episodes with Ioan Gruffudd and our own Jamie Bamber. I adored Bamber in those and yet didn't recognize him at all when I first saw him playing Lee Adama. That's a good actor. And a good haircut.

Day 18 -- Favorite Title Sequence. They often annoy me, truthfully. I think the True Blood one is pretty impressive, but I can't watch it because it makes me a little sick to my stomach. I also like the Murdoch Mysteries one, but the music is so hypnotic that I skip that one, too. It is rather like the music for Dexter...if you wish to understand how annoying.

Day 16 Deja Vu...uhm...guilty pleasure...guilty...okay. Whale Wars. See? I don't care much for reality TV. And dramatically speaking,, Whale Wars isn't good television. They have a problem and that problem is this...the ocean is big and nothing much happens out there. So they have to make up stories about nothing and have the Sea Shepherds, a collection of earnest, evangelistic nerds that I suspect all smell like hamsters, do very silly things to up the dramatic tension. Like...drive a non-ice worthy boat into an ice field...and get stuck and then...say that the boat is not built for ice but they had no choice but to face the ice field and possible hypothermic death because...they ARE on television. Still, it is a show about a group of people with their hearts, if not their minds or hygiene products, in the right place. So, I watch it.

rabid1st: (Default)
Day 11 - A show that disappointed you
Day 12 - An episode you’ve watched more than 5 times
Day 13 - Favorite childhood show
Day 14 - Favorite male character
Day 15 - Favorite female character

Day 11 -- Almost every show I have ever watched disappointed me at some point, usually at the finale but sometimes much earlier. It would be better to list the shows that did not disappoint. That would be Farscape and Supernatural so far. Though both of those shows got on my nerves at a few points along the way. The major disappointments would be Buffy and Doctor Who and Battlestar Galactica. All three of those shows took seriously wrong turns and didn't recover from the mistake. As I've said before on this blog, I feel that most shows simply use the same device over and over again for too long. The major failing of most shows is a lack of courage and imagination. They get set in their ways and the characters stop growing and changing. I will say that Buffy did the best job at changing, which is why when they started resetting the character to a heroes don't make mistakes default it was so very jarring. Doctor Who also made a sort of jarring error by claiming that the hero was a god, and beyond real love, rather than a space nerd in need of companionship.

Day 12 -- There are a few episodes I've watched many times. Buffy and Doctor Who hold the records for reviewing for me. I watched all of the Spike-centric episodes of Buffy many times. But I also watched the early Angel/Buffy episodes, too. I have a particular fancy for Doctor Who's "Robots of Death"...Four and Leela on a space liner...I don't know how many times I've watched it. Quite a few. I also watched Kinda several times with Five and Tegan. And, of course, Fear Her and Tooth & Claw. For my fellow Beauty and the Beast fan, I've watched most of S1 and S2 multiple times.

Day 13 -- I didn't really watch television as a child as we didn't have a TV for much of the time. But I do remember watching Land of the Lost at some point. Oh, I did just love Space: 1999.

Day 14 -- Favorite Male Character. Oh, now, there is a real challenge for me, given what has become of the Doctor. I have enjoyed a host of male characters in fiction. I am quite fond of Dean Winchester for example. But I suppose it would have to be the Doctor, still. He's my favorite character overall, even with his recent downturn into fecklessness. So, it must be him.

Day 15 -- Favorite Female Character. At one point, before she went into self-righteous pity mode, I would have said Buffy Summers. But her treatment of Spike soured me on her. And I also didn't care for her acceptance of some of the less deserving characters on the show. Now, I imagine it is most definitely Rose Marion Tyler. She's the only woman I think would be a good match for the Doctor and that's saying something.

Here's the link for the entire meme...should you wish to do it yourself.

rabid1st: (Default)
It has probably dawned on all of you by now that I don't watch much television. So, this meme is getting rather repetitive. And boring! So, I've decided to just do a handful of days at a time to get this over with quicker. Yes, I am rather impatient. Also, at the rate I'm writing this will take forever.

Day 08 - A show everyone should watch
Day 09 - Best scene ever
Day 10 - A show you thought you wouldn’t like but ended up loving

Okay, at first I thought Day 08 was the same as an earlier day. A show I wish more people were watching. But then I realized that it wasn't quite. This could be any show at any time that I just think everyone should watch. I would say that show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer...S1-S5. Buffy broke so much ground in television. Nearly ever modern show has some BtVS influence. If only the really annoying song that tells us how we are supposed to feel that plays over a montage of character scenes at the end of an episode. Yes, you can thank Buffy and Joss Whedon for that.

Day 09 -- And again we are with Buffy. Another reason everyone should watch Buffy is the game changing scene was a standard in the show. Case in point, my favorite all time scene is the one at the end of Out of My Mind...when we learned that Spike is in love with Buffy. It caused me to shiver all over and jump out of my seat to cheer. I never expected the show to go there. And they would do that time and time again...take the episode right before The Body. Or New Moon. Or Oz making that phone call to his aunt about his baby cousin biting his finger. Earshot elevating Jonathan. So many great scenes.

Day 10 -- Easily Supernatural. That show surprised the heck out of me. I tried to watch it from the beginning about four times before I finally forced myself to get beyond episode 7. I had no idea it would have one of the best runs of any show on television. Of course, like the X-Files and Buffy it is going to go on beyond what should be the proper end. I don't know how it will turn out in the end.

rabid1st: (Default)
And we are back with another entry in this neverending meme.

Find the list of days and topics in my original post here...

Day 06 -- Favorite Episode of Your Favorite Show

I am tempted to say Doomsday and see if you people remember that Doctor Who is not listed as my favorite show. I am also quite happy with the episode that just aired on Doctor Who, but I'm not sure it can make favorite because it still has River in it. And the Fez moment. I think that the dividing line among New Who fans might be if you found that Fez shooting funny or painfully stupid. I'm in the later group, I'm afraid.

But back to the Favorite Episode of my Favorite Show. And I am wondering if there is a "Favorite Episode of any show" day? Because I do have a frontrunner there. I will save it for BEST SCENE ever because that was one reason it was my favorite episode ever...it had the best scene ever.

So on Farscape, I am torn, there are three episodes I love pretty much equally. I love the finale, even with the sad parts of it. I loved the one where Crais and Talyn get to make a big statement to the Peacekeepers...I was never so in love with Crais as in that moment. Not that I loved Crais. *looks around at nothing much. What I mean is Crais went big and bold and he was magnificent there. But my absolute favorite episode is the one where John gets the upper hand on the Scarrans in We're So Screwed Part 3: La Bomba. But I love the set up for it in Part 2: Hot to Katratzi.

John Crichton up on a table top at a conference of the Superbad Villians with a bomb strapped to his belt--"Because I am an American. And what does an American want? Democracy? Capitalism. I want to sell out and settle down. For one day only, it's a blue light special on Aisle Three. My wormhole technology... and a free set of steak knives... for all the tea in China. And anything you can imagine to pay me... welcome to my cold war. You must be the Emperor. Now, before anybody decides to get clever, you should know I have multiple dead-man sensors from every culture on my ship and a few cultures I haven't heard of. My heart stops, we all go boom. My heart speeds up, it's boom again. Too hot, too cold, too happy, too sad, thirsty, hungry, bored... it's John Lee Hooker Time... boom, boom, boom. And you try your little psychic trick... kaboom... and we're all pushing up day-glow daisies."

Someone remarks that John is completely insane and Aeryn is all, "I know. Isn't it wonderful?"

LMAO! Talk about a mad man in a box.
